Weekend in Miami Round-Up: Madeleines, Baked Eggs, Gorgeous Kitchen, Sake Glasses, Costume Jewlery, Kids Toys

We spent the weekend in Boca Raton and Miami, eating delicious food and catching up with friends. The view above is from our table at the Dune Deck Cafe in Lantana.  Here are a few of my other favorites. Of course I forgot to pack the camera, so please suffer through the iPhone pics.

Gisela’s Herb and Parmesan Baked Eggs

Is there a better way to start a Saturday than poolside with baked eggs?  I saw a dash of cream, plenty of fresh herbs and a sprinkle of Parmesan go into these before they were popped into the oven.  Read about baking eggs here.

Gisela’s Madeleines

The Florida orange zest in these made the whole house smell like sunshine.  This was Gisela’s first attempt at Madeleines (she used Mark Bittman’s recipe), and they were perfect.  Warm, orange-scented, crisp-edged cakes of lovely.  I am purchasing this madeleine pan tout de suite.

Ice Cream at Sloane’s in Boca Raton

The apple pie ice cream won raves, but what I loved best about Sloane’s was the train set enclosed in the counter.

Genius Jones

In the middle of our ice cream cone stroll we stumbled on a mecca of intelligently-designed kids gear – everything from baby bottles to toys to strollers to clothes.   Sadly it was already closed, so we just stood there for a minute with our noses pressed against the glass.  Lucky for us, there’s an online shop!

Did you see this guy in Kia’s Super Bowl ad?

Christine’s Eat-in Kitchen

Even a dim camera phone pic can’t dampen the allure of this room.  It opens up to the kitchen, so technically it’s an eat-in, but it has enough panache to serve as a dining room.  I love the cheery yellow gingham she picked for the chairs.

Oh and did you get a load of the fabulous 1940’s turquoise food warmer and the vintage milk bottles?

West Palm Beach Antiques Spectacular

While poking around this cavernous antiques fair I fell in love with this SLJ Italy cuff, and with it’s seller, Dorothy Loud, who looked like Iris Apfel’s sister in style.  She has the most over the top collection of costume jewelry, and only sells via shows.  Keep an eye out for her if you frequent antique fairs.

Naoe in Miami

Naoe serves unparallelled sushi, but what I’m still dreaming about are the crumpled sake glasses.  Have a feeling they won’t be easy to find – stay tuned.

How to French Braid + Braid Inspiration

Ever since an impulsive bob haircut, I’ve been teetering dangerously on the precipice of soccer mom hair.  There’s nothing to do but pull it back, pop vitamins, eat lots of hair-strengthening oils and wait for nature to restore my customary length.  Chin up, I say.

Meanwhile, the milkmaid, head-skimming braids we saw last year have loosened up quite a bit.  Voluminous, messy side plaits are everywhere: the runway (Alexander Wang), Hermès ads, the red carpet and last but certainly not least, on Garance Doré’s superb blog.

Thinking back to when I had long hair, it seems that the trick to these would be to part the hair deeply on one side, tease the crown a bit (but not this much), braid loosely in the opposite direction of the part, and tighten the braid towards the bottom.  Then maybe go in and rough it up again with a teasing comb.

Lucky has a handy french-braid how-to video for those of us whose hands get all confused when  trying to braid our own hair in the mirror.  It looks so easy I may give it a whirl.

In the meantime, while I wait for Return of the Mane, here are some braid inspiration pictures for all you long-haired lovelies.
